Rotation Schedule

Each year of training reflects a continuum of graduated experience and responsibilities. The program emphasizes growth each year in all major competencies required for professional growth, including medical knowledge, patient care, professionalism, interpersonal skills and communication, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice. Residents must become familiar with the six core competencies of training and understand the goals and objectives of each competency, as they relate to a particular year of training.

The schedule for each year is comprised of thirteen four week blocks. Each year is roughly divided into thirds, with residents beginning alternately in Medicine and Pediatrics each year to take advantage of the seasonal variations of disease. In the PGY1 and PGY3 year, eight of thirteen blocks will be in Internal Medicine and the remaining five will be in Pediatrics. In the PGY2 and PGY4 year the pattern is reversed, with eight of the thirteen blocks in Pediatrics and the remaining five in Internal Medicine. Our particular curriculum features a solid balance of core rotations and elective experiences.

Residents transition to their PGY 2 year after nine blocks of internship in both disciplines. More in-depth knowledge and experience of both General and Subspecialty Medicine and Pediatrics is required for the role of supervisor and teacher.

Vacation time is shared between the two Departments and can be taken from ambulatory or elective blocks while on Medicine and from ambulatory blocks while on Pediatrics.

At the completion of four years of training, each resident will have completed twenty-six blocks (twenty-four months) in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
